David Charles Gonzales passed away peacefully August 4, 2026, with his family by his side. David is survived by his wife of 64 years, Ursula Gonzales; his son Stephan, wife Jen and granddaughter Allie; daughter Darlene Thornock, granddaughter Jessica, grandson Billy and great granddaughter Jade; daughter Valerie Holt, husband Ronnie George, and granddaughter Christina Lindgren and husband Nate; son Kevin Gonzales; sister Gloria Holt, husband Mark, niece Amy Nordby and nephew Adam Mabbutt.

He is preceded in death by his mother Rosie, father Charles and brother Neftali.

David was born in Nyssa, Oregon on August 18th, 1940. He grew up attending Nampa schools, graduating from Nampa High School in 1958. Soon after graduation, he joined the army. While stationed in Germany he met the love of his life, Ursula Ehrenfeld. They married and settled in Nampa where they raised their four children.

While David was considering his career options, he decided to team up with his father Charles, turning their passion for books, art and antiques into a business. In 1974, the Yesteryear Shoppe opened its doors in downtown Nampa and began serving the community. He started with a variety of antiques, art and three hundred books. Eventually, David became sole owner and ran the Shoppe with his son Stephan until 2017.

The community embraced the Yesteryear Shoppe with open arms. He didn’t just consider his patrons customers, but friends. The rest is history as the Shoppe grew in scope and volume, eventually having an inventory of over 300,000 books and 50,000 records. His album collection had every genre imaginable, including rock and roll, western, folk, classical music, and a fine collection of vintage jazz. He had approximately 10,000 collectable comic books. He highly treasured various forms of art and out of print, rare and first edition books.

The Yesteryear Shoppe was often featured in various news outlets and was selected multiple times as Idaho’s Best Awards as the best bookstore in the region. David was also an active member of the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America. Besides the public, his customers included celebrities, artists, writers, politicians and government officials. David also provided a search service for his customers and would ship books anywhere in the country or the world. The Shoppe was opened for 43 years, closing in 2017.

David was warm, loving and cherished as a husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was devoted to his family and will be missed by all who knew him and loved him.

A celebration of life will be held by the family, date to be determined.
