Charles William Sutphen, better known as Chuck, was born on December 20, 1942, in Philadelphia, PA, and spent his years living a life that was as vibrant and engaging as he was. A charismatic and witty individual, Charles was known for his quick humor and the warmth that he brought into every room. He astounded people with his intelligence and creativity, which he put to use in his hobbies of rock polishing, crocheting, and writing poems. Charles was an avid reader, too, and could often be found engrossed in a book, losing himself in different worlds and ideas.
A proud and dedicated patriot, Charles served his country with distinction for over two decades. He enlisted in the Navy on June 13, 1960, transitioning to the Navy Reserves in 1963 before enlisting in the Army in 1965. He retired from active duty in 1982, having been recognized with numerous awards and medals, including the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. His service was a testament to his bravery and commitment to his country. His devotion extended to his family and his faith as well. Charles was a loving husband to his late wife, Dee, and a devoted father and grandfather. As a devout Baptist and an associate minister, Charles lived his faith, echoing the words of the apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 4:7, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."
Charles is survived by his sister, Marie Bymaster, his son Charles Jr., his daughter Rebekah (Jay) Pratt, his step-son Marcel Korvela and step-daughter Kelsey Korvela. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Joshua, Josiah, Jadon, EJ, Radley, Bella, and great-grandson Acai. He was preceded in death by his father, Elmer Sutphen, mother, Ruth Durr, and his beloved wife, Darlene Sutphen.
In remembering Charles, we celebrate a life filled with love, faith, and service. We invite you to share your memories of Charles on his memorial page and upload photos that capture his spirit and the joy he brought to those around him. In this way, we can all be part of celebrating the unique and inspiring life that Charles lived. And in the words of Psalm 34:18, "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." May these words bring comfort as we remember and honor Charles together.
