Sunday, Feb. 23rd, 2020, Bernadette “Bernie” Tipton passed away in Boise Idaho at the age of 97 years old. She was my grandmother and she was deeply loved by her family.
Bernadette Agnes Seubert was born on Dec. 28, 1922, along with her twin sister, Dorothy, to John and Anna Seubert. She was raised on the family farm with her nine brothers and sisters near Cottonwood. Hard work was instilled early in her life by her parents and that mentality was evident throughout her whole life. In the last years of her life, Bernie couldn’t rid herself of the guilt of not being productive. She often would jokingly ask to mow the lawn or pull the weeds. Being “lazy” was her main source of worry up to the last days of her life.
Bernie was an avid bowler, competing in her local leagues. Some of our better memories will be her bowling strikes and performing her little dance afterwards. She spent many summer days fishing on Winchester Lake. She owned the Twins Crystal Bar in Cottonwood Idaho, which burned down in the late 70’s. She and her sister, Dorothy, purchased the Stockman’s Bar in Cottonwood and renamed it to The Twins Bar where they ran the business until 1998. Many stories are still told about the feisty twins keeping the peace where their 4-foot-9 ½ inch bodies could be seen breaking up loggers fighting or snapping a towel at someone using foul language. Dynamite in stereo when these two were in their drink-pouring prime.
After spending many years in Cottonwood, Dorothy and Bernie moved to Boise to be with Bernie’s daughter, Jackie, and husband Billy. Later, Bernie was moved to Ashley Manor Senior Living in Boise to be with her sister Dorothy who had moved there the year before. Even in their 90’s, they would match outfits each morning, making it hard to tell them apart for those that didn’t grow up with them.
Bernie married Deward “Cy” Tipton in the early 1950’s and they had one child, Jaqueline “Jackie” Ann. Cy passed away in Nov 1966, Jackie preceded Bernie in death in March of 2016. Her twin sister Dorothy passed in Jan of 2019. She is survived by her son-in-law, Billy Bair, her grandchildren, Jesse Bair (Eunjoo), Cody Bair (Juanita), and her great grandchildren Areum Bair, Gavin Bair and Brooklyn Bair. Niece and nephews, Debbie Schumacher (Roy), Wayne Kelly, and James Kelly.
Mass will be held at 1 p.m. March 14th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Cottonwood, and burial will follow at Cottonwood Cemetery. Cremation arrangements are under the care of Bella Vida Funeral Home and Crematory in Boise. Remembrances may be left on Bernie’s webpage at
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation or your charity of choice.
